If you are anything like me, you perhaps have wondered if God is really concerned about your financial freedom. I mean you already understand that he wants you to be free from sin and to live in the joy of that freedom, but when it comes to your financial situation, is he really wanting you to experience freedom there too? I personally believe that he does.
I want you to think about this story for a moment found in Luke 9:1-5
“1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. 2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. 3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. 4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. 5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
Now specifically center your attention on verse 3. Do you see it? In the instruction given to his disciples to go and share the good news of the Kingdom of God, Jesus specifically tells them not to take anything for their journey and specifically he calls out money as one of those things not to take. This begs the question; why?

Jesus was essentially telling them that nothing in this life should bog them down from living out their purpose to share what God has done for them. The most important thing in this life is to have a meaningful relationship with God, but when we get our attention on material things, we can quickly lose sight of that relationship. These external things can become a hinderance. If we can properly look at them as tools for assisting us with the job, then we can proceed correctly. I mean think about the fact that even in Jesus’ time it took money for these disciples to travel and share the gospel. They would have to afford, places to stay, food to eat and even sometimes the cost of transportation to get where they needed to go. So realistically God wasn’t saying they should have no money, rather he was implying that he would provide for their needs.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33
God is concerned about your financial freedom even more than you are because he wants complete control over providing for you. And as the good Father that he is, he knows what you need and when you need it, and he has promised that if we seek him first, he will provide it accordingly. On the other hand, if we are first focused on our finances in an attempt to ensure we have what we think we need or worse yet, what we want/desire, then we end up in frustration, perhaps even worry and fear as debt grabs a hold over our lives. Ultimately, we become a slave to providing for ourselves or in even worse cases slaves to the ones we’ve become indebted to.
Don’t you think it’s time to break out of that slavery and experience the financial freedom God intended for you to live in by acknowledging our failure, turning our back on our past behavior and doing a new thing by seeking God’s will first and foremost.
